Adnan Syed has requested to be released from prison while awaiting a retrial. Syed is currently serving a sentence for the murder of 17-year-old Hae Min Lee in 1999.
In a court motion published in The Guardian, Syed's lawyer Justin Brown argues that Adnan is not a "danger to the community," and that his 17 year stay in prison is "based on an unconstitutional conviction for a crime he did not commit." Syed's case became a sensation due to the podcast Serial, during which journalist Sarah Koenig recounted the events of Hae Min Lee's murder and the subsequent trials.
The podcast led many to believe that Syed was innocent, and earlier this year a judge granted him a retrial.
