Who is Gypsy Rose Blanchard?
Gypsy Rose Blanchard was an inspirational young girl in her local Missouri community who continued to fight adversity after adversity with her mother, Dee Dee, by her side. Confined to a wheelchair and relying on a feeding tube, it appeared as though Gypsy Rose suffered from countless medical issues, including brain damage, leukaemia, epilepsy and asthma.
She received medical and financial assistance from numerous sources and local media outlets regularly shared her story as a beacon of hope.
However, when Dee Dee was found violently murdered on 14th June 2015, it became apparent that all was not as it seemed. Gypsy Rose was quickly arrested in connection with her mother’s death and the real story started to come to light.
What did Gypsy Rose Blanchard do?
In reality, Gypsy Rose had been abused by her mother since a very young age. Dee Dee is believed to have suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental condition that sees a caretaker fabricate illnesses in the person under their care to elicit attention.
Gypsy Rose was essentially a prisoner in her own home and grew desperate to escape. In 2012, she met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website and continued to communicate with him for two-and-a-half years. When Dee Dee found out about the relationship in 2015, she forbade Gypsy Rose from seeing Godejohn.
The young couple then came up with a plan to murder Dee Dee and set Gypsy Rose – now 23 years old – free. One night, after Dee Dee had fallen asleep, Godejohn entered her room and stabbed her multiple times.
Is Gypsy Rose Blanchard still in prison?
On 5th July 2016, Gypsy Rose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years behind bars. She served her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri.
In September 2023, it was announced that she had been granted parole. She was released from prison on 28th December 2023, two years early.
What happened to Nicholas Godejohn?
While Gypsy Rose was charged with second-degree murder, Nicholas Godejohn stood trial for first-degree murder. He was found guilty at the end of 2018 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Who is Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s husband?
In the summer of 2022, Gypsy Rose married Ryan Scott Anderson in a small prison ceremony. The pair first started talking in 2020 after Ryan, a hospital worker, sent her a letter. The pair lived together in Louisiana after Gypsy Rose's release and had plans to start a family. However, in March 2024 it was announced that the couple had separated.
Gypsy Rose had also racked up more than eight million Instagram followers but in the same month deleted all her public social media accounts. She stated that after speaking with her dad she decided that she didn't 'want to live [her] life under a microscope'.
