Care home worker and recluse, Mark Howe, blurred fiction with reality by killing his mother, Katrina Wardle, in July 2013 after becoming obsessed with TV series, Dexter. The 21-year-old from Leicester who was an avid viewer of the US series stabbed his mother 53 times with a 12-inch knife after an argument about his cannabis use. Police reported that the force of the stabbings was so severe that the tip of the knife was bent.
The offender then chillingly proceeded to call his sister to confess his crime as he headed to work.
Howe was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 21 and a half years.
