07 May - Edmund Kemper is charged with eight counts of murder

Just four years after his release from prison following the murder of both his grandparents, Edmund Kemper is charged for another 8 deaths. This time the victims include a string of largely college educated women, earning him the nickname the ‘Co-Ed’ Killer. It is the murder of his own mother however that prompts him to turn himself in to the police knowing his arrest to be inevitable. A man whose childhood games included pretending to be executed in a gas chamber and burying cats alive, in the ‘70s Kemper became the blueprint for the FBI’s newly adopted term ‘serial killer.’ Read the full Edmund Kemper crime file
